   06.09.11

Come enjoy a day of free fishing at the M. Barnett Forever Wild Field Trial Area near Greensboro in Hale County. The Alabama State Lands Division will open several catfish ponds to public fishing on the following Saturdays: June 18, July 9, August 6 and September 10. The ponds off of Hale County Road 35 can be accessed from the gates near the north property line. Fishing will begin at 6 a.m. and the gates will be closed at 3 p.m. County Road 35 is located west of Highway 69 off County Road 16 south of Greensboro and north of Highway 80 east of Uniontown. Anglers age 16-63 must have a fishing license.

The Forever Wild Field Trail Area consists of 3,340 acres of pasture and a mixture of pine hardwood forest purchased by the Forever Wild Land Trust from the Alabama Department of Corrections in the fall of 2008. Historically, the former State Cattle Ranch was a working cattle ranch and catfish farm operated by Corrections. The land was purchased by the Forever Wild Land Trust as a Nature Preserve and Recreation Area. The Alabama State Lands Division began work in the fall of 2008 to restore the pasture with native grasses.

In 2009, the Forever Wild tract was opened to organized field trials for retriever and pointing dogs. In addition to the public fishing and organized field trails the Forever Wild Tract has a successful physically disabled hunting area and youth hunting program.
