Conservation Achievment Recognized, Meadow Valley Flowage Dedicated

   06.14.11

MADISON, Wis., – Supporters of wetland conservation gathered recently to celebrate the 600-acre Meadow Valley Flowage wetland enhancement project in Juneau County, Wisconsin. Among those assembled were several DU major sponsors and volunteers, project partners, federal representatives and family and friends. This project recognizes their continued support and celebrates DU’s 100,000th acre conserved in Wisconsin.

Several speakers shared the sunny afternoon stage, including Nels Swenson (Wisconsin DU State Chairman), Congressman Ron Kind (D-WI), Scott Gunderson (Wisconsin DNR Executive Assistant), and Rebecca Humphries (DU Great Lakes/Atlantic Region Director), to acknowledge the importance of partner organizations working together to ensure successful wetlands conservation and meeting significant milestones that projects like Meadow Valley Flowage represent.

“The Meadow Valley project is a wonderful example of how conservation gets done in Wisconsin,” said Rep. Kind. “It’s a partnership between public and private interests. Ducks Unlimited has used that same formula again and again in Wisconsin, and that’s why we’re able to recognize 100,000 acres today.”

Following the presentations, the sponsors gathered to unveil a bronze plaque near the Meadow Valley Flowage Southeast management unit commemorating the supporters and partners who made the project possible. In addition to the 30 DU supporters and their families listed on the plaque, project partners include the Wisconsin DNR, North American Wetlands Conservation Council, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Stan Plis Sportsman’s League, Inc., and DU.

Ducks Unlimited is the world’s largest non-profit organization dedicated to conserving North America’s continually disappearing waterfowl habitats. Established in 1937, Ducks Unlimited has conserved more than 12 million acres thanks to contributions from more than a million supporters across the continent. Guided by science and dedicated to program efficiency, DU works toward the vision of wetlands sufficient to fill the skies with waterfowl today, tomorrow, and forever.
