Navajo State Park Presents Wildlife Programs

ARBOLES, Colo. – With its variety of ecosystems, Navajo State Park provides great habitat for many types of wildlife. Unexpected sightings, mysterious sounds, and occasional signs all help to remind us that other creatures use the park for their own benefit as much as we do. This weekend, Navajo presents programs that will lend some insight into the ways of the wildlife that inhabits this area.
On Saturday, July 23 at 4:30 p.m. the afternoon Kids’ Corner program is entitled “Animal Adaptations.” The park naturalist will lead children ages four and older in discussion and activities which will help them explore the various ways that wildlife adapt to their surroundings. Maybe we will learn a bit about our own adaptations, as well. Meet at the Navajo State Park Visitor Center Pavilion for this 45-minute program. Younger children must be accompanied by an adult.
Then at 7:30 p.m., the park naturalist will present “The Wild Cats of the Southern Rockies.” The bobcat, the lynx, and the mountain lion differ greatly from each other. Yet, as cats, all three have the same remarkable adaptations that make them highly successful predators. Come to the park amphitheatre to find out more about these amazing creatures of the forest, mountains, and rocky ridges. In the event of rain, this presentation will move to the park’s visitor center conference room.
If you would rather be out in the park looking for wildlife, Navajo is now offering a new service for scheduling your own personal guided hike with the park naturalist. Some of the trails are better than others for finding animals or their sign, and the park naturalist will be happy to provide a guided experience that is tailored to your special interests and activity level. This service will be offered on Saturdays and Sundays, from 9 a.m. to noon, through Labor Day. Twenty-four hour advance notice is required. Naturalist-led hikes on other days of the week can be scheduled at your convenience, as well, with more advanced notice.
