What do doves and mollusks have in common? Both will be featured on Feathers and Filters, the second episode of Outdoor Alabama Live. Watch this hour-long interactive presentation hosted by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) on Tuesday, August 16, 6:30 p.m. CDT, at www.outdooralabama.com/Webcast/.
Feathers and Filters will focus on dove biology and hunting, and the Alabama Aquatic Biodiversity Center (AABC), the largest state-run non-game recovery program of its kind in the United States. Staff from the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (WFF) will answer your questions during the webcast. Featured guests include dove specialist and wildlife biologist Jeff Makemson, AABC Director Dr. Paul Johnson and Assistant Chief of Law Enforcement Kevin Dodd. Wildlife biologist and Hunter Education Coordinator Marisa Lee will host the show. The show will close with an Alabama State Parks update.
Doves are the most abundant, widespread and adaptable North American game bird. Alabama is participating in a national dove banding program to help better understand this common bird. Doves are popular with hunters offering fast flying shooting opportunities.
Alabama is known to have the greatest number of freshwater species of mollusks in the United States. However over the past 80 years, Alabama has lost more than 67 species of these mollusks and fish to extinction. The mission of AABC is to promote the conservation and restoration of rare freshwater species in Alabama waters and in turn, restore cleaner water in Alabama’s waterways.
