Babes with Bullets, a three day firearms “immersion” camp, is returning for the second year in a row to the Lucky Star Ranch in Chaumont, NY. Once again the sponsor of this event is OTIS Technology, who offers the event as a training program for their female employees. The camp begins on Friday, August 5th and ends on Sunday, August 7th. According to camp director, Deb Ferns, “we are fortunate to have OTIS Technology as one of the big sponsors for our camps held across the country. That we also have the opportunity to train their (OTIS Technology) employees’ makes this camp a very special one for us.”
Ferns attended the first camp held in 2004 at the home range of head instructor, Kay Miculek. For the last seven years Ferns and Miculek have hosted camps across the country and now boast over 2,000 camp alumnae. Kay Miculek is a several time national and world handgun champion as are the other female instructors assisting her. “This is a unique training opportunity” stated Miculek, “with all female handgun champions picked for their abilities to work with novice women in a way that is empowering without being overpowering.” According to Ferns many of the campers will shoot a gun for the first time, plus learn how to draw from a holster and shoot on the move all within three days. Miculek added, “Each woman will leave from this camp with a new life skill. Our emphasis is to prove that shooting is a safe, enjoyable, and rewarding sport for women of all ages. Plus this gives them (the students) the opportunity to ‘try before they buy’ since the handguns are provided on loan by Smith & Wesson.”
When asked how campers view the program Ferns suggested it was “part pajama party, part adventure camp and part firearms training.” She also mentioned that campers typically range in age from mid-20’s to mid-60’s.
