RAMAH, Colo. – In celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Day, Colorado Parks and Wildlife will host a family outdoor skills day at the Ramah State Wildlife Area northeast of Colorado Springs on September 24.
Youngsters interested in learning more about hunting and fishing skills such as casting, archery, shotgun and small-caliber shooting are invited to stop in anytime between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“The fourth Saturday of every September has been set aside to honor the tradition of our nation’s outdoor heritage as National Hunting and Fishing Day,” said Steve Lucero, an education coordinator with Colorado Parks and Wildlife. “We see this as a great opportunity to introduce youngsters and parents to firearms safety and shooting sports, to let them try their hand at archery or to learn how to cast a fishing rod.”
Instructors will help youngsters learn the finer points of using fishing gear, shooting bows, shotguns and .22 caliber rifles. Activities include how-to tips for spin and fly casting, trap and skeet, target shooting and archery.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife will furnish the equipment.
The Ramah State Wildlife area is located four miles west of the town of Ramah along U.S. Hwy 24 in northeastern El Paso County.
All ages are welcome. Boys and girls under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Activities will run continuously throughout the event.
Congress established National Hunting and Fishing Day in 1972 to recognize hunters and anglers for their leadership role in funding fish and wildlife conservation.
“I urge all citizens to join with outdoor sportsmen in the wise use of our natural resources and in insuring their proper management for the benefit of future generations,” wrote President Richard M. Nixon in the inaugural National Hunting and Fishing Day proclamation.
