Fall Trout Stocking Begins Oct. 14 in Iowa

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources will begin its fall and winter trout stocking on Oct. 14, with releases planned for Lake Petoka in Bondurant, Ottumwa Park Pond in Ottumwa, and South Banner Lake in Summerset State Park, north of Indianola.

The DNR will release about 1,500 rainbow trout at each location as part of its cool weather trout program that brings trout to areas that cannot support them during the summer months.

Trout will be released in Ottumwa Park Pond at 11 a.m. and around noon in Lake Petoka and in South Banner Lake.

On Oct. 21, the DNR will release trout Big Lake in Council Bluffs at 3 p.m., followed by stockings on Oct. 22 at Lake of the Hills in Davenport at 10:30 a.m., and on Oct. 28 at Prairie Creek Park (Cedar Bend) in Cedar Rapids at 10 a.m.

Anglers will need to have a valid fishing license and pay the trout fee to fish for or possess trout.  The daily limit is five trout per licensed angler with a possession limit of 10.

Children age 15 or younger can fish for trout with a properly licensed adult, but they must limit their catch to one daily limit.  The child can purchase a trout fee which will allow them to catch their own limit.
