Advisors Sought for International salmon panel

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is seeking nominees to the advisory panel that counsels state representatives to the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC), an international body dedicated to protecting fish and wildlife on the high seas.
Members of the state advisory council must be Washington residents, with knowledge of salmon, steelhead and other species associated with their lifecycles. Members serve four-year terms with a maximum of two consecutive terms.
Heather Bartlett, Hatcheries Division Manager, said the department is seeking qualified candidates to fill all five positions on the advisory panel, which is appointed by the U.S. Secretary of State.
Of the five members of the Washington advisory panel, at least one must represent commercial fishing interests and another must be affiliated with environmental concerns.
“The job of conserving our salmon resources doesn’t end at the federal 200-mile limit,” Bartlett said. “We’re looking for people who understand the dynamics of resource management in Washington State and beyond.”
The five members of NPAFC include the United States, Canada, Japan, Russia and South Korea. Established by international convention in 1992, the organization has focused on enforcing the ban on high-seas salmon fishing and researching salmon productivity in the open ocean.
Nominations to the advisory group must be received by WDFW no later than May 15, 2012.
