Zeal Optics is a truly eco-friendly company located in Boulder, Colorado. They encourage their employees to bike to work among other green initiatives and the trend is reflected in their products. The company has announced a line of sunglasses made from castor plant oil, rather than crude oil, which it claims is a more sustainable alternative.
The sunglasses will be added to their line of existing sunglasses that are made for both men and women who wear them for lifestyle, active and performance activities. Their sunglasses range in price from $70 to $200.

ZEAL Optics demonstrates sustainable style with their plant-based sunglasses. The Boulder-based company makes every sunglass frame from Z-Resin, a bio-based plastic made from castor bean oil instead of crude oil, making the product eco-friendly without sacrificing quality or performance. ZEAL is proud of its commitment to eco-friendly practices while continuing its drive to produce quality eyewear.
“ZEAL’s passion is based on an active lifestyle and enjoying the planet,” said ZEAL Optics director of marketing, Joe Prebich. “Every effort has been made to make our sunglasses not only the best active wear fit, but also to really be proactive in building with responsibility.”
Z-Resin is derived from the castor plant, which has a positive effect on the environment and can be planted and replanted while crude oil releases tons of CO2 during its manufacture, harming the eco-system. In fact, the castor plant is a near perfect resource because it’s an efficient, extremely fast-growing perennial that’s easy to grow, withstands drought and thrives on marginal lands, meaning it doesn’t compete with food crops.
In order to take steps in the way of eco-consciousness the ZEAL team is also committed to biking to work.
“Surrounded by the great community of Boulder, preserving the planet as best we can is part of our everyday lives,” added Joe Prebich. “Having a green focus isn’t a strategic plan, its just part of the roots of ZEAL.”
