Oregon DFW to Host Family Fishing Event at Walter Wirth Lake

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will host a free Family Fishing event at Walter Wirth Lake in Cascade Gateway Park in Salem on Saturday, May 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“This is a great opportunity for families to discover a new outdoor activity they can enjoy together,” said Karen Hans, ODFW fish biologist. “Wirth Lake is easy to get to and has excellent access and facilities for families.”

ODFW will provide loaner fishing rods, bait and tackle for registered participants at the event.  Participants are welcome to bring their own gear and ODFW will supply bait and extra tackle if needed.  There also will be plenty of ODFW staff and volunteers to show families how to get started.

The lake is stocked regularly with rainbow trout and also has several warm water species such as largemouth bass and bluegill. The lake is wheelchair accessible.

All fishing regulations apply. Anglers aged 13 years and younger will not need a fishing license. Anglers 14-17 years old will need a juvenile license, or adults assisting youth angler will need a regular license, which can be purchased in advance at ODFW field stations and license outlets but not on site the day of the event.

The event is part of ODFW’s Family Fishing Program, designed to introduce families to the fun of fishing.  For more information about the event at Walter Wirth Lake, call Karen Hans (541) 757 5251. For a list of other Family Fishing events throughout the state, visit the ODFW website.

To find the Wirth Lake at Cascade Gateway Park, take I-5 south or north bound to the Hwy 22 (Stayton, Detroit Lake) exit. Go west on Mission Street, then south on Turner Road about ½ miles.  Turn left into the entrance to Cascade Gateway Park.
