Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area in Colorado Offers a Hike in the Big Sandy Wash

Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) Naturalist Claire Davis and Volunteer Geologist Bob Hickey will lead visitors on a fascinating hike on Saturday, May 6, to explore the metamorphic rock of Big Sandy Wash. The easy, 3.5-mile hike will begin at 9 a.m. and end at noon.
Big Sandy Wash is located in the Four Mile area, northeast of Buena Vista. Take US Highway 24/285 east from Johnson Village, and turn on left County Road 304 at AHRA’s Collegiate Peaks Overlook. At the horse corral, continue on County Road 304 to the right and go approximately 1.5 miles. There is a parking lot immediately on your right with a large sign and map, and the hike will begin at this point. Hikers should bring plenty of water, snacks and sunscreen, wear good hiking shoes and dress accordingly for the weather. There is no charge for the hike, and dogs must be on a leash.
