Fish Planting: An Important Way to Attract New Fishermen

A popular new way of attempting to restore fish habitat and populations in places where they have been dangerously depleted is to plant fish into lakes and other bodies of water in many states. One of the programs in Northern California has been in practice since 1981.

This attempt at restoration is important for a number of reasons, not the least, it is an effort to try and once more attract fishermen to these overfished waters. In addition, it greatly assists in the restoration of the natural ecosystem of the lakes in which the fish are planted.

This process has been used with varying success in other states before as well. The guidelines for planting fish, especially trout and salmon are very specific, according to the California Department of Fish and Game. The water must be between 75 and 78 degrees or the fish will not be planted in the water.

The plants began at the start of the April and will continue into the middle of May.
