Oregon and Washington fishery managers announced the closure of sturgeon retention in the John Day Reservoir of the Columbia River, effective 12:01 a.m. Monday, May 21, 2012.
The 2012 white sturgeon harvest quota is 500 fish, which managers predict will be met on May 20.
In other areas of the Columbia River, sturgeon harvest in The Dalles Reservoir is currently well within its harvest quota of 300 fish and remains open to the retention of sturgeon.
The Bonneville reservoir was closed on Feb. 18 with a catch of 940 fish from the 2,000 harvest guideline.
Similar to last year, fishery managers set a four day summer retention season for Bonneville Reservoir to occur on two consecutive Friday-Saturday openers of June 15-16 and June 22-23 to harvest the remaining 1,060 fish. Only white sturgeon between 38 and 54 inches fork length may be retained during these openers.
