Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officials announced today that a portion of the Denton Creek Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) Trail, located in Roscommon County south of Houghton Lake, will be temporarily closed due to a bridge replacement project. Bridge construction is expected to begin May 11, 2012, and should be complete by June 29, 2012.
The old wooden bridge was in poor condition and a new structure has been designed to enable trail users to securely cross the creek. “The new bridge will be a wonderful improvement to the Denton Creek ORV system,” said Paige Perry, DNR Recreation Specialist. “We ask for the public’s patience as we improve the trail crossing at Townline Creek, and utilize the reroute signed for their use. We are hopeful that the bridge will be open as the busy summer riding season gets into full swing.”
A one-and-a-half-mile reroute using county and forest roads will be in place during the construction period. The trail closure location and temporary reroute, along with other ORV riding information, may be found on the DNR’s website at www.michigan.gov/dnr.
Given that this location has been developed and maintained for ORVs less than 50 inches in width, the project is being funded by the ORV Trail Improvement Fund administered by the DNR. These funds are derived from the sale of ORV trail licenses for the machines used in those activities. The funds are to be used solely for ORV-related projects including trail infrastructure, improvement, and development.
Questions regarding the status of this project may be directed to Paige Perry, DNR Recreation Specialist, at 989-732-3541, Ext. 5086.
