Strong Like Bull: Russian Man Survives Arrow to the Neck
OutdoorHub Reporters 05.11.12
April 30 just wasn’t Konstantin Myakush’s day – in the midst of a casual stroll through a neighborhood park with his two young daughters, an errant arrow entered and exited the thirty eight year old’s neck. Despite his gruesome injury, the Russian from Moscow kept calm throughout the entire ordeal. He even managed to phone his wife who called paramedics for him.
The arrow came from a nearby sports center and struck him directly in the middle of his neck and exited just below his jaw on his left side. It is still unclear who shot the 20 inch long arrow and whether it was an accidental shot or a ricochet.
Just one more inch to either the right or left and it would have pierced a major artery. Yet Myakush remained conscious and calm throughout the ambulance ride, the numerous hospital scans to make sure the arrow hadn’t pierced an organ and then the operation in which surgeons successfully removed the arrow.
The sports center officials have suspended an instructor who is currently under investigation. The club has agreed to end outdoor practice sessions.
At this time, Myakush is recovering in an intensive care unit and is expected to make a full recovery in a few weeks.
