Florida Poll Indicates Support Remains Strong for Stand-Your-Ground Laws

Following the news that House Democrats withdrew a proposal to enact a the so-called “Trayvon Amendment”, a poll conducted by Suffolk University and WSVN Channel 7 has shown that 50 percent of Florida voters support their state’s stand-your-ground law. Thirty-two percent of those polled were against the law and 18 percent indicated that they were undecided.

The law in question states that an individual has “the right to stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force if he or she reasonable believes it is necessary to do to prevent death or great bodily harm.”

The poll also went into greater detail about which groups supported and opposed the law. Somewhat predictably, 51 percent of Democrats oppose the law, while 70 percent of Republicans support it (only 12 percent of Republicans oppose it); 47 percent of independents support it while 30 percent oppose it. The majority of men expressed support for the law with 61 percent in favor and only 24 percent in opposition. However, female voters were split, with 39 percent supporting and 39 percent opposed.
