Indiana’s Dunes Creek Restoration Earns Another Award
OutdoorHub 05.15.12
A project to restore Dunes Creek to its natural condition at Indiana Dunes State Park has earned the property another conservation award.
The Indiana Division of the Izaak Walton League of America recently named the Dunes Creek Daylighting Project the winner of the organization’s Jane Dustin Water Quality Award.
“Daylighting” is a term for taking a stream that had been routed through a culvert and restoring it to an open channel, exposing the stream to natural light and restoring the stream’s natural character. Daylighting improves water quality, reduces flooding and creates fish habitat.
In addition to the Jane Dustin award, the project has received multiple accolades, including the Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence, the Association of Conservation Engineers award, and the EPA /Chicago Wilderness Conservation and Native Landscaping Award.
The Jane Dustin award will be presented to Indiana Dunes State Park on June 2, at the Indiana Division of the IWLA State Convention at the Miller Chapter, 1250 Chrisman Road in Portage.
The project was nominated by Jim Sweeney, president, Porter County Chapter, IWLA.
Indiana Dunes State Park is at 1600 North 25 E., Chesterton, 46304.
