Indiana Young Birders Event at Salamonie Lake, May 26

The Indiana Young Birders Club is hosting an event at Salamonie Lake, May 26, with a variety of bird-related activities in and around the property’s interpretive center.

The day starts at 9 a.m. with the “Let’s Go Birding!” nature hike. Participants are encouraged to bring their binoculars. The goal is to count how many bird species hikers spot along the way.

Other activities include a bird identification quiz, meeting a live raptor, making replica hummingbird nests and entering a park-provided peanut in a contest to see which peanut will be eaten by a blue jay or other bird first.

The day’s last activity, a movie, starts at 7 p.m. and is at the interpretive center.

During several activities, participants will have a chance to win a Kaufman Field Guide to the Birds of North America.

For more information and to register, call (260) 468-2127.

The interpretive center is in Lost Bridge West Recreation Area, off Highway 105, in western Huntington County.

The standard gate fee of $5 per in-state vehicle and $7 per out-of-state vehicle will apply when the gatehouse is open.
