Ohio Students Excel at World’s Largest Archery Tournament

Twenty-seven Ohio teams with 632 student archers competed at the 2012 National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) National Championship on May 11-12 in Louisville, Ky.
The Guinness Book of World Records was on hand to confirm that the 7,804 participating students from 34 states and Canadian provinces made up the world’s largest archery tournament.
Ohio resident Tyler Finley, a ninth grader at Maysville High School, located in Zanesville, topped the field of 7,803 other students and was the top overall archer, scoring a record-tying 298 out of a possible 300 points. He was also named to the first All-American team and was the winner of the scholarship shoot-off where he received a scholarship valued at $10,000.
Ohio had a strong showing in the high school division with two teams taking spots on the podium. Maysville High School (Zanesville) placed second and Logan Hocking High School (Logan) was third. Megan Besecker from Troy High School (Troy) took fifth place honors in the female division, scoring a 289 out of a possible 300.
In the elementary division, Anna Ezell from Bluffsview Elementary in Worthington took second place in the fifth grade division, scoring a 280 out of a possible 300.
NASP brings target archery to the school gym. The curriculum covers archery, safety, equipment, technique, concentration skills and self-improvement. NASP was created in 2002, and Ohio started participating in NASP in 2004. For more information on the program, visit www.ohionasp.com.
