Join Colorado Parks and Wildlife at National Get Outdoors Day on Saturday, June 9, between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at City Park in Denver to experience outdoor recreation activities for families. Design your own state park with your favorite outdoor activities, learn about wildlife in the Junior Ranger Camp and enjoy learning to fish with your family. And, meet Talon – the state parks’ tall and feathered boating safety mascot – and enjoy other fun activities.
The 5th Annual National Get Outdoors Day event is free. Get Outdoors Colorado, a coalition that includes Colorado Parks and Wildlife, celebrates this national event designed to connect kids and families of all backgrounds and abilities to nature to encourage healthy, active lifestyles. Get Outdoors Colorado is a project of the Colorado Nonprofit Development Center.
At the Colorado Parks and Wildlife booths, youngsters can touch the hides from elk, deer and other wildlife, crawl around in a tent, and learn about nature and the many ways to have fun outdoors. Colorado Parks and Wildlife staff and volunteers will “Take a Family” fishing, where trained anglers will teach the popular sport. Come early to register and learn about fish.
Youngsters are also invited to experience the Junior Ranger program. Kids will learn how to identify animal sign, find their way using a map, and explore the different kinds of bugs, birds, and invertebrates that they can find close to home. Kids will take home their very own Junior Ranger badge and other fun outdoor gear.
“National Get Outdoors Day is one of the many ways that Colorado Parks and Wildlife introduces adults and kids to the fun outside activities available at the 42 parks,” said Rick Cables, Colorado Parks and Wildlife Director. “The event is also a great way to get ideas for summer and weekend outdoor recreation adventures.”
Colorado Parks and Wildlife staff and volunteers enjoy spending the day with kids and their parents, newcomers to Colorado and anyone looking for places to get outdoors and to try new recreational activities.
At the state parks throughout Colorado, visitors fly kites, fish and kayak, bicycle and hike, watch wildlife, geo-cache using GPS technology, picnic and boat, learn about nature, and explore many more outdoor activities.
“Colorado’s parks and wildlife areas are a major part of our visitors’ healthy, outdoor lifestyle,” said Cables. “The year-round activities, including camping, fishing, hiking and hunting, create family traditions in the outdoors and provide beautiful settings in nature that renew the spirit.”
