Josh Fankhanel and Jason Schrupp have knack for breaking barriers at the Kolar Toyota ALS Walleye Tournament. Two years ago the pair became the Kolar’s first-ever team to win back-to-back tournaments, and today they became the first team in the event’s 17-year history to win for a third time.
Fankhanel and Schrupp, who both hail from Vergas, Minnesota, also won the event in 2009 and 2010. Their total weight of 10.80 pounds to edge defending champions Troy Skorich and Chris Edquist of Superior, who weighed 10.04 pounds of walleyes in an effort to become repeat champions.
“We used the same strategy that won for us the other times,” Schrupp said. “We got to one spot and stayed there all day. We didn’t try to chase the fish around the lake. We were patient and it paid off.”
Wade Bakker of of Minnesota City, Minnesota and Scott Somers from Milwaukee boated the day’s largest walleye, a 3-pounder, to also capture Big Walleye Bonanza.
This year’s tournament included 162 2-person teams. All proceeds from the event go to fight Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The tournament is hosted by former professional athletes Darby Hendrickson, Kent Hrbek and Jim Johnson. Since the tournament started in 1996, the event has raised more than $1.85 million to fight ALS.
