Louisiana Saltwater Series Hosts Youth Fishing Festival

A hook, line and sinker is all you need to have fun at the inaugural Louisiana Saltwater Series Youth Fishing Festival on Saturday, June 9.  The free fishing tournament will be hosted at Elmer’s Island from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Children, 16 and younger, are invited to experience the chance to catch a big one among many other activities.

This day of fishing and fun will include casting lessons, cast netting, minnow races and fish tagging.   Participants will be provided with a free lunch, t-shirt and lots of fishing goodies.  Plus, the first 50 registrants (under 16 years old) will receive a free rod and reel, sponsored by Cabela’s.  Prizes will be awarded for big fish in several categories.

The tournament is being held during the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries’ Free Fishing Weekend, which allows anglers to fish in Louisiana waters without a permit.  Anglers, however, must still adhere to daily bag limits.

The tournament is co-sponsored by Cabela’s, Louisiana Wildlife Federation, Friends of Grand Isle, Grand Isle Community Development Team, Wal-Mart, Raising Cane’s, Louisiana Fish Fry and Coca Cola Bottling Company Baton Rouge.

All youth must be accompanied by an adult.  For more information and to register, visit www.lasaltwaterseries.com. If interested in volunteering for this event, please contact Danica Williams at (504) 628-7282 or dwilliams@wlf.la.gov.

The department reopened Elmer’s Island to the public in 2009 and can be accessed via a gravel road leading from La. Hwy 1 just north of Grand Isle.
