Father’s Day celebrates fathers and their influence on us all. This year, why not avoid the standard gift options and instead explore nature with him through fishing, scheduling a guided fishing trip, or buying him a fishing license?

Fishing is a fun and relaxing way to disconnect from everyday worries. Some dads prefer fishing because it offers a time to bond with a loved one or just get away from the hustle and bustle of life. Most dads say that fishing is a great way to relax because it makes them feel good, and a relaxed dad is a happy dad.

Fishing is an easy hobby to learn. Local bait and tackle shops offer a wealth of knowledge and advice, and some even offer fishing classes. The Internet is a great resource as well.  For example, the Basic Fishing handbook from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) is available as a free download in the fishing section of www.outdooralabama.com.

If dad is a novice angler, pamper him with a guided fishing trip for Father’s Day. Guided trips allow anglers to fish with the least worry. Guides can be found on online, by contacting a tourism agency, or through a local chamber of commerce. If you don’t want the experience of fishing from a boat, a list of freshwater bank fishing options is available in the fishing section of the ADCNR website at www.outdooralabama.com/fishing/freshwater/where/.

If you desire to fish from a boat, rentals are available at many Alabama reservoirs, state public fishing lakes, and various state parks. Alabamians operating a motorized watercraft, including those with just a trolling motor, are required to have an Alabama boater’s license.

A fishing license for Father’s Day is also a great gift idea.  The license will represent a desire to fish with him in the future. If the angler happens to be 64 years old, the gift of a fishing license can be a special memory. Anglers buying a license at age 64 automatically receive a special lifetime license for the price of the regular Alabama resident license fee of $12.10.  Lifetime licenses are also available to younger anglers; prices vary by age.
