Idaho DFG to Hold Open House to Discuss Proposed Non-Biological Changes and Sandhill Crane Permits

On Tuesday, June 26, 2012 the Upper Snake Region of the Idaho Department of Fish & Game will be holding an open house all day long to discuss proposed non-biological rule changes for the upcoming year, as well as proposed decreases in sandhill crane permit numbers.

The proposed changes cover a wide variety of topics ranging from types of bait that can be used for trapping to how to manage unlimited controlled hunts and allocation of elk tags in zones where the quota is capped.
According to Regional Wildlife Manager Daryl Meints, “Because Idaho is part of a larger Federal flyway management arrangement our sandhill crane permit numbers are tied into what other states are doing. This year other states are increasing permit numbers, so we have to decrease ours.” While crane hunts have been popular, some Idaho hunts only sold half of the available permits in the past, so a decrease in number of permits should not greatly impact the number of birds harvested.

Public commit will be taken until July 5, 2012. The Idaho Fish & Game Commission will rule on these issues at their July meeting; 11th-13th, 2012 in Bonners Ferry, Idaho.
