Youth Summit at the Jefferson Memorial

Washington, D.C. – Their scavenger hunt at the American History Museum completed, the students from NRA’s Youth Education Summit went back out into last week’s heat wave to explore the Jefferson Memorial.

A beautiful monument commemorating one of our founding fathers (and brightest minds), the venue is also there to provide a great source of shade as well as a cool breeze for the students when walking about the Tidal Basin.

The author of our Declaration of Independence, and third President of the United States, Jefferson was a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. In a letter to his nephew, Jefferson once wrote:

“A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives a moderate exercise to the Body, it gives boldness, enterprise, and independence to the mind . . . Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks.”

*ahem* The National Matches’ First Shot Ceremony is a week from today. It isn’t too late to register for one of our great national championships shot at Camp Perry this summer.

While at the memorial, the summit took time to hear a few of the students’ speeches. Topics covered a variety of issues seen about today’s headlines. Those in the audience showed their support by standing on their favorite speaker’s side as the presentations wound down.

After the handful of sessions and a plethora of photos, the sun sank low in the sky. It was time to say goodbye to Washington DC.

Friday promises to be a busy day as the Youth Education Summit planned to head for the Marine Corps Base in Quantico.
