New Team Match Debuts at Camp Perry

Port Clinton, Ohio – Competitors at the NRA National Pistol Championships had the opportunity to take part in a new team match this afternoon — the 3-Member Preliminary Team Event. NRA National Pistol Manager Tom Hughes said it was created because, “the competitions division wanted to turn it up a notch.”

Though the NRA National Pistol Championships have always had team matches, the scores were always a combination of three separate matches. The 3-Member Preliminary Team Event is different because all three members fire a different pistol, side by side, at the same time. As one team member shoots .22 caliber, another shoots center fire, and the last shoots .45.

Tom Hughes explained: “So before, there was a .22 Team Championship, Center Fire Team Championship and .45 Team Championship; this time we put them all together.” This unique match is great for competitors who may be weak in one event, but very strong in another.

As they readied for the match’s debut, spectators and competitors alike designated the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit’s 3-Member Team (pictured above with their targets) as the favorite. Although the results (see below) are preliminary, it looks as though the Marksmanship Unit placed fourth with the ULTRADOT 3-Member Team, pictured below, taking home the win. Congratulations to ULTRADOT team members Gregory Derr, Kenneth Saunders and Ron Steinbrecher.
