Joseph Hein Leads NRA Smallbore After Day 1
NRAblog 07.23.12
Port Clinton, Ohio – Sgt. Joseph Hein of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit holds the lead as day one of NRA’s Smallbore 3-Position Championship draws to a close. Hein, who has won the Smallbore 3-Position title two out the last three years, shot a record-breaking score of 1194-81x, surpassing the previous National Championship Record by three points.
3-Position Metallic Sight Championship(Prone) — Matches 231, 232, 233
Place | Competitor | Score |
1 | Joseph Hein | 1194-81x |
2 | Christopher Abalo | 1193-76x |
3 | George Norton | 1193-75x |
4 | Tarl Kempley | 1192-76x |
5 | Reya Kempley | 1191-8ox |
As fate would have it, all of the top five finishers beat the 2009 National Championship mark of 1191-76x including the previous record setter Tarl Kimpley. How’s that for a little fate?
Part of this total, of course, includes the Kneeling segment of the match. Though still preliminary, here are those scores:
3-Position Metallic Sight Match (Kneeling) — Match 233
Place | Competitor | Score |
1 | Joseph Hein | 399-28x |
2 | Amanda Luoma | 398-23x |
3 | Garrett Spurgeon | 397-24x |
4 | Matthew Chezem | 397-24x |
5 | Kirsten Weiss | 397-23x |
Hein was two Xs (bullseyes) away from tying the National Championships record of Justin Pentz who managed a 398-25x back in 2008. But with three points separating the top five shooters (four points if you go to the top seven) in the overall title race, Hein has more to worry about then racking up records.
