The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series in Portugal last Saturday was the natural setting for a day of hair-raising turns and intense dives into a small area surrounded by jagged rocks. Not only did the divers have to make a safe landing, but to win, they had to impress the judges with their tumbling fancy.
Jumping off a 28-meter (92-foot) platform, 28-year old Russian diver Artem Silchenko took the top title of the event with a flying front and back triple triple. He began the dive on an armstand with a blind entry. The degree of difficulty – 6.1.
In second place was Colombian Orlando Duque who lost by just a tenth of a point. Englishman Gary Hunt came in third. Two-thousand people came to the Portuguese islet to watch the spectacle in boats and kayaks, while a paramedic diving team made sure each high-diver emerged unscathed from the foamy waters.
