Video: Record-breaking Cheetah Covers 100 Meters in Under 6 Seconds

Of all land animals, the cheetah is claimed to be the fastest in the world. To be the fastest cheetah of all cheetahs is a truly remarkable feat.
Sarah, an 11-year-old cheetah held in captivity at the Cincinnati Zoo in Ohio, has set a world record for fastest land animal by covering 100 meters in 5.95 seconds. For comparison, Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt’s human world record for the 100-meter dash is 9.58 seconds.
Sarah broke the record during a photo shoot with National Geographic Magazine on June 20. She hit a top speed of 61 mph during the record-breaking event. Check out a video of the performance embedded below.

With her new record, Sarah beat hear personal best of 6.13 seconds which she set in 2009. Prior to that, the cat at the top of the 100-meter dash was a South African male cheetah named Nyana, who clocked in at 6.19 seconds.
Sarah’s sprint was documented with help from the National Geographic fund toward cat conservation, the Big Cats Initiative. Cheetahs are endangered in the wild, with an estimated 9,000 to 12,000 living outside of captivity.
