NRA Black Powder Ends its First Day With a Tie

No clear leader after shooters battle the elements in New Mexico.

Raton, New Mexico – After a long, hot, windy, sometimes rainy day on the range, the Black Powder Mid-Range Position Championships are half way over – and we don’t even have a leader. There’s currently a two-way tie for first place between Rick Moritz and Keith Lay at 273-4x apiece.

Position is the first of the two Mid-Range Championships; the other being prone. It is a 60-shot aggregate of 20 shots each at 200, 300 and 600 yards held over two days. The Prone Championship is identical save the position it’s shot in.

An afternoon storm rolled through the valley towards the end of the day, exposing shooters to crosswinds gusting at 35 mph. With the low velocity these competitors are shooting at, hitting the target – let alone an X – was very tough.

Luckily it passed quickly, but not before mucking up some shooters’ scores, and the day wrapped up.
