French Hunter Loses Hand after His Dog Accidentally Pulls the Trigger

A 55-year-old deer hunter in France whose dog accidentally shot off part of his hand has announced that he has officially forgiven his “adorable” pooch.

The hunter, only known as Rene, told France Bleu radio that his Blue Gascony Basset hound accidentally caught the trigger of his shotgun when it affectionately jumped on its owner. He and this three hounds were deer hunting in the Dordogne, south-western France. Two of his dogs ran after a deer, while the third stayed behind and jumped on him for a cuddle, catching his shotgun trigger.

Rene was hit in the right hand. He had to be airlifted out of the area and taken to a hospital in Bordeaux. The damage was so severe that his hand had to be amputated. Rene has since forgiven his dog, saying “it wasn’t the dog’s fault, and he’s adorable! I should have left the [gun’s] safety on, that’s all.”
