Shellfish Beds Reopened in New Jersey’s Northern Barnegat Bay

The NJDEP Bureau of Marine Water Monitoring has notified the Division of Fish and Wildlife that all state waters in Barnegat Bay north of the Rt. 37 bridge have been reopened to their prior classification as of 7:15 a.m. December 21, 2012. The Department has determined, through monitoring of water quality and analysis of shellfish tissue that the designated waters are now safe for the harvesting of shellfish. The waters had been closed on October 29 in anticipation of the potentially degraded water quality resulting from Hurricane Sandy.

For more information on the reopening of these waters, including a map of the affected waters, see the Administrative Order at http://www.njfishandwildlife.com/pdf/2012/shellfsh_reopen12-21.pdf on the division’s website.
