Holiday shoppers got a rude surprise when a 33-ton aquarium shattered in a Shanghai shopping mall. An onrush of water carried glass, fish, and three grown lemon sharks into the crowd. According to the China Daily, 15 bystanders were injured, most with lacerations caused by glass shards and one broken ankle was reported. A mall employee remarked, “It was horrible, like a bomb explosion.”
The previous inhabitants of the tank, including the lemon sharks, could not be saved. No information is available on what caused the aquarium to burst.
Surprisingly, this was the second aquarium accident at the Shanghai Oriental Shopping Center this year. A similar explosion occurred in June.
