New Mexico Fishing and Stocking Reports for Jan. 15

Northeast
- Cabresto Lake: The lake and campground closed May 14 and will stay closed while the dam is being rebuilt.
- Charette Lakes: Closed for the season.
- Clayton Lake: Closed for the season.
- Conchas Lake: Fishing pressure was extremely light and fishing was slow for all species.
- Coyote Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.
- Eagle Nest Lake: As of Saturday snowmobiles and ATVs were permitted on the ice, which had a thickness reported of 14 inches or better. Fishing this past week was a bit sporadic with some very good days and a few bad ones. On the good days, anglers did well using small ice jigs, wax worms, meal worms and Power Bait. They caught a mixed bag of trout, kokanee and perch. We had no reports on northern pike.
- Lake Maloya: Ice conditions over the weekend ranged from a depth of 9 to 11 inches. Fishing was good using homemade dough baits and Power Bait for 8 to 12 inch rainbow trout.
- Los Pinos: We had no reports from anglers this week.
- Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
- Maxwell Lake 13: Closed for the season.
- Monastery Lake: The lake is iced over and unsafe. It is off limits to fishing until there is open water accessible from the bank.
- Morphy Lake: Closed for the season.
- Pecos River: Trout fishing was fair using wax worms, egg patterns and salmon eggs. Most of the action again this past week was below the town of Pecos to the Villanueva area.
- Red River: Water flow below the hatchery was 18 cfs. Trout fishing was slow to fair using salmon eggs.
- Red River City Ponds: Closed for the season.
- Rio Grande: The water flow Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 522 cfs. The water was off color and fishing was generally slow for all species although there were a few trout taken by anglers using wooly buggers and garlic scented salmon eggs.
- Rio Hondo: We had no reports from anglers this week.
- Rio Mora: We had no reports from anglers this week.
- Santa Barbara: We had no reports from anglers this week.
- Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers.
- Storrie Lake: A layer of ice covers the entire lake and it is closed to fishing at this time. For updated conditions contact the Storrie Lake State Park office at 505-425-7278.
- Stubblefield Lake: The lake has reopened with a new agreement reached with the Vermejo Conservancy District. However, with the current low water conditions, fishing is discouraged at this time.
- Ute Lake: Fishing pressure was extremely light this past week with just a few anglers venturing out on the lake. Our only catches reported were one white bass and one walleye taken by an angler using slab spoons in 30 feet of water. The surface water temp was in the low 40s.
Northwest
- Abiquiu Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
- Animas River: Monday morning water flow at Aztec was 150 cfs. Trout fishing was fair using egg patterns, copper John Barrs and salmon eggs.
- Albuquerque Area Drains: Trout fishing on the drains was very good this past week using Power Bait, Mike’s UV GLO salmon eggs, wax worms, small streamers, parachute adams and Griffith’s gnats. Our best reports this week came from Albuquerque South, Peralta, Belen and Corrales Drains. Ravil Sitdikov and his son Ayrat fished the Corrales Drain on Jan. 9 and had a great time. They were floating/drifting Mike’s GLO salmon eggs under homemade balsawood mini bobbers on 4-pound-test fluorocarbon with very small split shot and size 10 hooks. This method allowed them to cover lots of water and fish shallow and in hard to reach areas. They caught and landed several fish in the 12 to 15.5 inch range. According to Ravil, “Our 2-hour fishing adventure at the Corrales Drain was just excellent and very enjoyable”. Drifting baits or flies on light tackle is one of the best methods of catching fish on all the drains. Give it a try.
- Bluewater Lake: Ice thickness Monday was about 10 inches. The cold weather kept anglers away. For updated ice conditions contact the Bluewater State Park office at 505-876-2391.
- Canjilon Lakes: We had no reports from anglers.
- Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 155 cfs and 57 cfs respectively. We had no reports from anglers this week.
- Cochiti Lake: As of Monday there was thin ice covering the entire shoreline and most of the main body of the lake. For updated conditions contact the Corp. of Engineers office at 505-465-0307.
- El Vado Lake: There is a thin layer of ice on the entire lake which is considered unsafe for ice fishing. For updated information, contact the State Park office at 575-588-7247.
- Fenton Lake: The lake is off limits to fishing at this time. Plan on heading here for great ice-out fishing in the spring.
- Heron Lake: There was a layer of ice on most of the lake considered unsafe for fishing. For updated ice conditions contact the State Park office at 575-588-7470.
- Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
- Jemez Waters: Water flow on the Jemez River as of Monday morning was 30 cfs and the area was receiving a rather heavy snowfall. Trout fishing on the lower Jemez was fair for anglers using copper John Barrs, bead-head pheasant tails and salmon eggs. We had no reports on other streams in this area.
- Laguna del Campo: Closed for the season.
- Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.
- Navajo Lake: Extremely cold weather kept most anglers off the lake this past week and fishing was reported as slow for all species.
- Ramah Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
- San Juan River: Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 359 cfs. Fishing in the Quality Water section was good using egg patterns, red annelids, chocolate and grey foam wing emergers, bunny leeches, Griffith’s gnats and streamers. Fishing through the bait waters was fair using, worms, wax worms, salmon eggs, small Daredevles and wooly worms.
- Santa Cruz Lake: The boat ramp has been closed due to low water conditions. We had no reports from anglers this week.
- Tingley Beach: Trout fishing slowed with the cold weather and light fishing traffic this past week and as of Monday there was some ice on all of the ponds. Fishing at the Central Pond and the Children’s Pond was slow to fair using wax worms, Power Bait and homemade dough baits. Trout fishing at the Catch and Release Pond was slow with just a few fish caught by anglers using leeches, egg patterns and red annelids.
Southwest
- Bear Canyon: Trout fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait, salmon eggs and wax worms. We had no reports on other species.
- Bill Evans Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good using small spoons, garlic scented Power Bait, homemade dough bait, meal worms and wax worms. We had no reports on other species.
- Caballo Lake: All boat ramps have been closed and will remain closed until water levels rise and it is safe for launching. Fishing pressure continued to be very light this past week and we had no reports from anglers.
- Elephant Butte: Inclement weather kept most anglers off the lake this past week. We had no reports. The Monticello, Dam Site and Rock Canyon boat ramps remain closed due to low water conditions.
- Escondida Lake: Trout fishing was fair using wax worms, garlic cheese, salmon eggs and homemade dough baits.
- Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 57 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
- Glenwood Pond: Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs and Power Bait.
- Lake Roberts: Trout fishing was fair to good using assorted Power Bait, homemade dough baits and salmon egg-corn combinations.
- Percha Dam: The water was low and fishing was slow for all species.
- Quemado Lake: As of Monday the lake was covered with a layer of ice which was unsafe for fishing.
- Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte as of Monday was 1.3 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.
- Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Southeast
- Bataan Lake: Trout fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait, worms, Super Dupers and salmon eggs. We had no reports on other species.
- Black River: As of Monday stream flow above Malaga was 8.2 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
- Blue Hole Park Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.
- Bonito Lake: Closed.
- Bosque Redondo: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait, red copper John Barrs, wax worms and homemade dough bait.
- Bottomless Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
- Brantley Lake: Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.
- Carlsbad Municipal Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, worms and salmon eggs.
- El Rito Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.
- Greene Acres Lake: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait and salmon eggs.
- Green Meadow Lake: Trout fishing was good using worms, salmon eggs, Power Bait and Pistol Petes. We had no reports on other species.
- Grindstone Reservoir: The lake has iced over and is closed to fishing at the present time.
- Jal Lake: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait, homemade dough bait and salmon eggs.
- Lake Van: Trout fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, garlic cheese, salmon eggs and Pistol Petes. We had no reports on other species.
- Oasis Park Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, worms, salmon eggs and homemade dough bait.
- Pecos River: Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 20 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
- Perch Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
- Ruidoso River: Water flow at Hollywood on Monday was 2.8 cfs. Trout fishing was slow.
- Santa Rosa Lake: Ice around the shoreline kept anglers away from the banks and we had no reports this week. The boat ramp remains closed to motorized craft.
- Sumner Lake: Fishing pressure was very light and fishing was slow for all species. The Violation Canyon boat ramp remains open at this time and will remain open as long as lake levels permit.
