Backcountry Fly Championship Out of Islamorada, Forida

Some spots are still available for interested competitors to join the annual Backcountry Fly Championship set for Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 21-23.

Anglers compete to catch the most inches of snook and redfish on fly tackle, with one inch equaling one point. Rules mandate that only two catches of each species over the two days of fishing can be counted toward an angler’s total inches.

A tournament kickoff and rules meeting are planned for 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at a yet-to-be-determined location.

For Friday and Saturday’s fishing, boats can depart at 7 a.m. from the dock at the Lorelei Restaurant & Cabana Bar, mile marker 81.9 bayside.

Lines-out is to be called at 3 p.m. each day. Dockside activities are to be scheduled at the Lorelei.

Custom-made Nautilus fly reels await the grand champion, runner-up to the grand champion and the anglers who catch the largest snook, redfish and tarpon. An awards dinner is set for 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lorelei.

Angler entry fee is $500 and all anglers must pre-register.
