15 Georgia Schools Qualify for Nationals
Woodlawn Elementary does it again, wins overall team title
The excitement was high at the seventh annual National Archery in the Schools (NASP)-Georgia State Tournament with 605 competing archers in 4th-12th grade shooting more than 24,000 arrows. At the end, Woodlawn Elementary from Chatsworth was crowned the overall high-scoring champion with a score of 3,225.
Archery teams were at the top of their game with 15 of 26 participating schools achieving qualifying scores for the NASP National Tournament, May 10-11, at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville. This national event will host more than 7,500 student archers from nearly 40 states making it the largest archery competition in the world.
WINNING SCHOOLS AND STUDENTS
Winners at the NASP-Georgia State Tournament include:
- Woodlawn Elementary of Chatsworth, GA shot a 3,225 to lead a field of 26 archery teams and more than 600 shooters from state-qualifying elementary, middle and high schools. Woodlawn featured elementary male division champion Braxton Bates, who arrowed a score of 288 (out of a perfect 300). Woodlawn will return to Kentucky to vie for the national championship in the elementary division, which the school won in 2011.
- Lee County Elementary’s Trellis Whaley won the overall individual female title with a score of 284. The fifth-grader from Leesburg was the highest scoring fourth-grade female at the 2012 National Tournament in Louisville.
- Morgan County Middle School won the middle school division with a team score of 3,079. Bulloch Academy in Statesboro is home to middle school male champ Joseph Lomax, who fired a 287. Haley Bagley from Bagley Middle School in Chatsworth won the middle school female division with a score of 273.
- North Murray High School won the high school division championship with a team score of 3,202. Dodge County High’s Joshua Peterson fired a 289 to win the overall high-scoring male award. Peach County High School’s Haley Woods shot a 278 to win the high school female title.
All division winning teams automatically qualify for nationals, while several other schools met qualifying scores to reach this year’s National Tournament in May.
A “team” consists of 16 to 24 shooters with at least five members of the opposite gender. Over 40 percent of the state tournament field was female.
Archery teams that competed in the Georgia-NASP state tournament this week had to win their division at one of six regional tournaments in January and February of this year or shoot a regional score high enough to be selected as a wildcard team. More than 1,100 student archers competed in the regional tournaments.
Georgia teams qualifying for nationals are: Woodlawn Elementary (3,225), Bay Creek Elementary (3,159), Lee County Elementary (3,012), Lake Park Elementary (2,992), Bay Creek Elementary JV (2,956), Liberty Elementary (2,950), Morgan County Middle (3,093), Bagley Middle (3,059), Bulloch Academy (3.045), Dodge County Middle (3,005), Wynnbrook Christian (2,985), North Murray High (3,202), Johnson County High (3,147), Lafayette Christian (3,128), Peach County High (3,126).
