Turkey Season Looms for Arkansas Hunters

Arkansas turkey hunters soon will head into woods and fields in chase of spring gobblers. The special youth turkey hunt will be April 13-14, followed by the statewide season opening April 20.

Adult hunters should note that jakes are not legal for harvest. However, youth hunters may harvest one jake as part of their two-bird limit. No more than one legal turkey may be taken per day. Hunters may not exceed any zone harvest limits.

Biologists recommend that hunters employ some age-old advice to fill their tags. Hunters should try to do some preseason eavesdropping and find as many places to hunt as possible. Plan to have several gobblers or groups of gobblers pinpointed in case other hunters are in the same areas.

Hunters should have their equipment ready when opportunity arises. Old diaphragm calls should be replaced, box calls should be chalked and shotguns should be patterned. The season is 16 days for most of the state, so hunters must make every opportunity count.
