Comments Sought on Proposed Region 6 Mountain Lion Quota Changes in Montana

Public comments are being sought on a proposal to change mountain lion harvest quotas in Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Region 6 outside of Hunting Districts 680/690.

The proposed changes would increase the harvest quota from three lions to four lions and would introduce a sub-quota of two female lions.

FWP biologists say the quota increases are justified because of increased numbers of lions showing up in atypical habitat, as well as increased sightings of the animals. The current harvest quota has also been filled three of the past four years, including one lion being harvested during each of the past two general rifle seasons.

The female lion subquota is being proposed because there has been a high proportion of females in the overall harvest. Of the six lions harvested in the area over the past two years, five were females.

The proposed harvest changes were tentatively approved at the Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission meeting on April 11.

Public comments on the proposals will be accepted until 5 p.m. on May 20. Electronic comments can be sent to fwpcomm@mt.gov, and mailed comments can be sent to FWP Commission, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, P.O. Box 200701, Helena, MT 59620-0701.
