Alabama’s Timmy Horton High School Bass Anglers Challenge to Pay $20,000 in Scholarship Money

Alabama students in grades 7-12 can fish their way to college on Saturday May 18. The Timmy Horton High School Bass Anglers Challenge 2013 on Pickwick Lake offers $20,000 in college scholarships. The tournament, which will be staged out of the Rose Trail Park boat ramp west of Cherokee, is open to students in public, private and home schools. Entry is free.
Horton, a Bassmaster Elite Series angler from Muscle Shoals, expects the student anglers in the tournament to have little trouble finding plenty of big bass in Pickwick Lake. “Pickwick is on fire right now. It’s one of the best bass lakes in America,” Horton said. “This tournament is going to be loads of fun for the kids and for the boat captains too. Best of all, it’s going to help the kids continue their education after they complete high school.”
Students will compete in two divisions, grades 7-9 and 10-12. Trophies will be awarded to the top teams in each division. The scholarships will be awarded to the top individual anglers in each division.
Students are not required to be a member of a fishing team at their school to enter the tournament.
A limited number of volunteer boat captains will be available for students who do not have a captain to take them fishing.
Competitors will receive a souvenir T-shirt and a pre-tournament meal on Friday night.
“I am stoked about this tournament,” Horton said. “For students to be able to come to one the hottest bass lakes in the country and fish for big largemouth and smallmouth in a tournament that is going to be televised nationwide on the Pursuit Channel and win college scholarships is exciting.”
The Professional Anglers Association’s stage will be used for the tournament.
“For any kid who has ever dreamed about being a professional angler, this tournament will give them a taste of what it’s like to fish in a pro-level tournament, right down to the stage they will walk across at the weigh-in.”
In addition to the prizes offered to the top angler, a $500 prize is being offered to the competitor who writes the best essay about fishing or conservation. Complete rules for the tournament and the essay contest, along with entry forms for the tournament, are available at www.FishPickwickLake.com
Colbert County Tourism and Convention Bureau has secured special rates at local hotels for competitors and their families during the tournament. Campgrounds are also available.
