Monroe Lake will host its annual Kids Fishing Derby at Paynetown State Recreation Area from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 1.
The event will be at the fishing dock across from the beach. Kids ages 16 and younger are invited to participate. All fishing equipment and bait will be provided. Participants are also welcome to bring their own gear.
New or beginning anglers are especially welcome at the kids derby. Instructors will be on hand to teach basics and offer assistance.

The Kids Fishing Derby is part of Free Fishing Weekend. On June 1 and 2, Indiana residents can fish without a license. Free Fishing Weekend is an opportunity to try fishing or introduce someone new to the sport.
The Activity Center at Paynetown SRA will be offering additional fish-themed family programs throughout the afternoon and evening on Saturday, June 1, and during the day on Sunday, June 2. The complete schedule is at dnr.IN.gov/parklake/2954.htm.
