Dachsund Dies Saving Men from 400-pound Black Bear

Two Michigan men are singing praises for a four-pound wiener dog named Bradley that perished while saving them from a black bear nearly 100 times its own weight. According to upnorthlive.com’s Nathan Edwards, the two men were visiting John Force, the dog’s owner, and traveling through the woods near his home on a golf cart. They were accompanied by Bradley, whose owners say was prone to being fearless.

“They came across the mama and her cubs on the trail and they were a bit surprised, none of them had ever seen a bear before,” Force said.

With her cubs in tow, the bear was acting aggressively and Force said it was likely that the animal would have attacked the men, if not for a timely intervention by the dachshund.

“Brad jumped off the golf cart and attacked the big bear, they got into a scuffle,” Force said.

It allowed time for the men to retreat. The one-sided fight between dog and bear only lasted a short while but by the time Bradley returned to the men they could see that the dog was gravely injured. Bradley later died from a fatal bite sustained during the fight. While the loss of their canine companion has hit the owners hard, they say they are relieved their friends are safe.

“He was only four to five pounds, but in his mind I think he thought he was 100 pounds,” said Lisa Force.
