Will Cabela’s ColorPhase Technology Revolutionize Camo?

Cabela’s announced the release of their “ColorPhase” technology, camouflage patterns that change from subtle greens to browns and grays according to temperature, earlier this year. Coming in different sizes and pattersn for gloves, pants, shirts, jackets, and caps, the hunting and outdoor gear giant obviously has big plans for its color-changing brainchild. According to the company, ColorPhase camo works because it is printed on “rapid-change, temperature-activated dye.” Under normal conditions, ColorPhase camo will began changing colors at 65 degrees Fahrenheit. This would allow hunters to better blend in with the darker shades found later in the year, therefore extending the use of the camo.

It is certainly one of the newest and strangest innovations in camouflage over the past few years—save except for maybe Fishouflage—and sportsmen are deep in discussion over the possible benefits of ColorPhase. Some animals are not likely to notice the difference between green and brown, such as color-blind whitetails, while the camo may be able to trick certain sharp-eyed birds like turkey. In fact, a turkey’s vision is about three times better than a human’s in the daylight.

Its usage in the field will either vindicate the design or leave it to be deemed yet another amusing gimmick.
