Video: Scientist Finds Dog-sized Tarantula in Guyana

Piotr Naskrecki, a photographer and entomologist conducting research in Guyana, recently surprised his followers by uploading pictures of a giant spider to his blog. The humongous spider is roughly the size of a puppy and is considered the second-largest spider in the world. It is called the Goliath bird-eating spider, which is perhaps a misnomer since the spider does not, in fact, usually eat birds. It does, however, eat about just everything smaller than it. It is actually so large that it makes noticeable stomping sounds when it walks.
“Its feet have hardened tips and claws that produce a very distinct, clicking sound, not unlike that of a horse’s hooves hitting the ground (albeit, admittedly, not as loud),” Naskrecki wrote.
If you’re a medium-sized rodent, this is about the closest to a real-life Aragog and Shelob as you’re going to get.
