Video: Monster Lingcod Caught in Kayak

Lingcod are neither ling nor cod, but are part of the greenling fish family and live in West Coast waters from Alaska to California. Prized for their table quality, lingcod are a favorite target for sportfishermen who typically fish them with heavy spoons or jigs in water that can be over 300 feet deep.

Angling guide Michael York was fishing solo in his kayak on the Gulf of Alaska when he hooked this massive ling. These fish have been known to grow to 100 pounds, and while York’s fish is well shy of that mark, it still proved to be a major test of both his tackle and muscle endurance.

The final landing sequence also made us wonder how the angler managed to remain upright.

Enjoy the fight.
