Gun manufacturer Smith & Wesson recently donated $500,000 to the United State’s largest gun industry trade body to help its fight against the Massachusetts attorney general’s ban on the sale of semiautomatic rifles to civilians.

Smith & Wesson said it had donated the money to the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s (NSSF) battle against “arbitrary government action that threatens to turn lawful gun owners and dealers into criminals.”

Maura Healey, the Massachusetts attorney general, said “the gun industry has found a way to exploit our laws, a loophole of potentially horrific proportions and it’s time we act.” Healey also accused gun companies of getting around the law by selling state-compliant “copycat versions of their assault weapons” with “small tweaks that do nothing to limit the lethalness of the weapon.” Fortunately, the gun lobby doesn’t lay down easily, and fought back launching plans for legal action against Healey, who it claims has “undermined the legislative and public process by unilaterally declaring products that were legal to be illegal.”

Lawrence Keane, NSSF’s senior vice-president and general counsel, said “her actions totally disregard 18 years of Massachusetts firearm law, supported by all state regulatory agencies and understood by all concerned, in which firearm retailers have operated.” Keane went on to say, “in doing so, she has endangered the livelihoods of family-owned businesses and made potential felons out of tens of thousands of law-abiding citizens.”

The NSSF has also called on gun owners and manufacturers to donate to its #GUNVOTE campaign, that helps gun owners to register to vote ‘and encourages them on election day, armed with the facts, to #GUNVOTE so they do not risk their rights.” You can follow Gun Vote on Twitter for more information.

  1. this is a scary time for gun owners. they will make me a criminal and try to take my guns. this is what our government wants but the politicians would rather put this on the supreme court. being an even vote know 4 to 4, the next president will appoint 2 maybe 3 for life. most important election for our right ever in my life time. I could not believe bill was able to put in that type of legislated crap for years but this is a nonelected group of people that should understand the constitution and I am sure they do, but vote their agenda. it makes me sick what is happening and depending on what happens could start the next civil war. they can make me a criminal and take my guns but they will have to kill me to do it! we need to limit government it has gotten to big for it’s birches. we need to balance the budget. not spend, spend on borrowed money. these leaders cannot be that stupid so they know what they are doing. sorry I am just so pissed off at current and past governments reckless running our government into the ground. social security was used to balance the budget for many years until made illegal by the government who was doing it. I wonder why they do not have enough to support my retirement, doesn’t it???? I am seeing red!!

  2. well art, the govt is NOT trying to take our guns. how long have they been saying obama was going to? it never happened, and never will

  3. Mike C you know nothing of this and you shouldn’t be commenting. You say no one is coming for your guns? That’s correct on the surface but you have failed to do the research within. They most likey will never come to your door and take them they will tax them make you register them ban the manufacturing of them just like they did machine guns now mg are 20-50,000 dollars no avg person can own one. Your statement Mike C is shows your total lack of understanding history and current events.

  4. Lethalness? Apparently Ms. Healey was a C- student in grammar school as well as law school. As well as inventing law and gun bogeymen, she seems to have the same propensity when it comes to words. Did she have a piece of celery stuck in her teeth when she said that?

  5. This is dumb. I cant believe this is even up for vote….AND YET I see nothing about mental health at All this is is just a band aid that they think would work and in the end it won’t…

  6. What Smith and Wesson needs to do is stop selling its weapons to the State of Massachusetts. It’s one thing to oppose the ban with a paltry donation. It’s another to inflict gun control on the State itself, to cripple their ability it acquire weapons.

Weapon manufacturers should not sell any weapon to the State that the State doesn’t allow its own citizens to own.

But then again money is more important that principal to many companies.
