Video: Michael Phelps Will Race Great White Shark During Shark Week

After proving time and time again to be the fastest human in water, Michael Phelps will now take on a more experienced swimmer – a great white shark!

For anyone else to take on this challenge would be laughable, but for a guy nicknamed the “flying fish,” this could be interesting.

Sure, sharks are the oceans top predator and are armed with rows of razor sharp teeth, but Phelps has the “Phelps face,” and that alone could be intimidating enough to propel him past his most ferocious competitor yet.

“Phelps vs. Shark: Great Gold vs. Great White,” produced by NBC News‘ Peacock Productions, will air on July 23 during, you guessed it, Shark Week – the Discovery Channel’s annual marathon of shark-related programs.

Now, we haven’t heard exactly how the race will go down, but we sure hope there’s more than just a lane marker separating the two swimmers! Something tells us that a great white shark might not deal with losing too well . . .

In the meantime, Phelps has already been studying his competition, as he posted the following photo to his Instagram account with the caption, “I was able to do something that I had always wanted to do. Be in a cage and dive with great white sharks!!”

Some might call it a long shot, but for those who stayed up in the middle of the night to witness Phelps make history during his Olympic runs, they know better than to doubt him.

We’re taking Phelps in this race, and we can’t wait to see him glide across the water one more time.
