Since 2002, the Sojourn has been our signature annual event, attracting hundreds of riders each year to the most spectacular trails and towns in the Northeast. And this year we’re returning to two of the most famous long-distance trails in the country, the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) and the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historic Park (C&O). Whether it’s your first attempt to cycle between Washington, D.C., and Pittsburgh, Pa., or if you’re a veteran of the route, this journey rewards the imagination with every mile.

Held a month earlier than usual — June 17 to 24 — the 2012 Sojourn will begin in historic Georgetown in Washington, D.C., following the pastoral scenery, lockhouses and aqueducts along the C & O Canal towpath to Cumberland, Md.

The ride will then join the longest rail-trail east of the Mississippi, the GAP, passing through historical towns, leafy countryside, along rivers and streams and across mountain trestles and bridges, on what is now one of the most popular multi-day rides in the nation. Recent additions and improvements to the GAP will make this a remarkable experience for both experienced riders and first-timers.

For this year’s Sojourn, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy is partnering with one of Pennsylvania’s most experienced outdoor adventure companies, Wilderness Voyageurs, who will be taking care of all on-the-ground logistics and event registration.
