Free Alabama Waterfowl Management Workshop Scheduled for Feb. 4

The Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries in cooperation with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, the Auburn University School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service will host a free waterfowl management workshop at the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge visitor center on Saturday, February 4, 2012 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Designed to provide the latest in research and practical habitat management techniques, the seminar will focus on what landowners and hunters can do to manage waterfowl using sound, science-based information. The workshop is also an opportunity for beginner waterfowlers to get hands-on duck identification experience.
The seminar will begin with presentations from professional biologists covering topics such as waterfowl food habits and habitat use, managing crop and moist soil plants, manipulating water levels, and cost share programs available to offset management costs. A tour of the waterfowl management impoundments of the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge will be conducted after lunch.
AU School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences waterfowl professor Dr. Gary Hepp will be presenting at the seminar and says the best available waterfowl habitat is vitally important for waterfowl hunters. “With a little knowledge and active management, waterfowl hunters and landowners can attract ducks to their wetlands either for hunting or wildlife viewing,” said Hepp.
