Official Pure Michigan Flavor of Michigan State Parks to be Unveiled at Meijer on Feb. 21

   02.17.12

Representatives from the Michigan departments of Natural Resources (DNR) and Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), Pure Michigan, Hudsonville Ice Cream and Meijer will cheer on the 2012 Outdoor Outstanding Kids and Meijer Corporate Research Chef Ray Sierengowski as they tackle the tasty challenge of choosing the official ice cream flavor of Pure Michigan and Michigan state parks.

In January, the DNR partnered with Hudsonville Ice Cream and Pure Michigan to launch the “Create a Flavor” contest, inviting ice cream lovers of all ages to submit combination ideas that would best capture the spirit and flavor of Pure Michigan and Michigan state parks. More than 3,000 ideas – ranging from Tahquamenon Falls Root Beer Sundae to Hex Hatch Jubilee – were submitted via the Hudsonville website. The field was narrowed to four flavors, from which the 2012 Outstanding Outdoor Kids and Chef Ray will select the winner.

While the judges deliberate over the winning flavor, invited guests can take in live Dixieland music, enjoy free samples of Hudsonville’s Grand Traverse Cherry Fudge and Michigan Deer Tracks ice cream and learn about the many easy-to-learn and fun-to-do outdoor recreation opportunities available at Michigan state parks and recreation areas.

Aside from bragging rights for submitting the winning ice cream flavor, the grand-prize winner will receive free Hudsonville ice cream for a year, a one-week stay in a Michigan state park or harbor of the winner’s choosing, a $1,000 Meijer gift card and Pure Michigan merchandise.
