Snowmelt Contest at Indiana Dunes State Park

   02.20.12

Indiana Dunes State Park is hosting its second annual snowmelt contest this winter.

Visitors to the park can try to predict when a large snow pile will melt completely. The closest guess will win a 2012 DNR Annual Entrance Permit and a family membership with the Friends of Indiana Dunes.

The snowmelt contest snow pile is in the middle of the beach auxiliary parking lot, next to the park’s main gate.

“Visitors are welcome to come size it up and place their guess on when the last sliver of ice will melt away, signaling spring’s arrival,” said Brad Bumgardner, the park’s interpretive naturalist. “The park will maintain the pile should Mother Nature bring us more, but no other alterations will be done.”

Predictions for this year’s snowmelt contest can be submitted at the park office and nature center, or by emailing name, address, and date and time you think the snow pile will melt to dunesnc@dnr.IN.gov.

The deadline to enter is March 4. Hints and updates on expected melt dates will be offered for fans of the Indiana Dunes State Park Facebook page at Facebook.com/INdunes.

For more information, call the nature center at (219) 926-1390.

Indiana Dunes State Park is at 1600 North 25 E. Chesterton, 46304.
